The Top Chip Places in Cape Town

Call it chips, slap chips or French fries (no one I know in SA calls it fries) but ya potato potato.

In this post I am focusing on my top 5 best places in Cape Town to get a lekker chip.

All these places make their chips in different ways. From skinny to crispy to that lekker soft slap chip each has its own deliciousness.

Check them out:

Oh this is no secret to the fast food world. This world wide brand is legendary and can be recognised just by its branded M. I have tried this in many a different country during my travels. I must say you know what you are getting. The staple burger and fries menu. But I do think that there is a different taste. Personally when I was recently in the US we stopped at a Mcdonalds and the quality was spectacular compared to the SA version.

I am Mcds fan and there is nothing like a drive thru moment. The ease of this meal is something that we marvel over.

This trendy and very young feeling brand is more of an up market restaurant. Their branches are known as a great spot for everyone to hang out. I do feel that their customers is the younger 20 somethings looking to eat a great meal, drink but also be in a place with a vibe.

They sure do bring the vibe. Before Covid was a thing certain branches would be so busy. Especially on specific days. As you can see there is many reasons why. Besides have the brand image and creating this vibe in their restaurants. The reason why I kept coming back was the menu.

Marketing for this brand is on point. Capitising on trends and what is hot right now. Their tiger king branding was the clever touch that their market and me would buy into. Not letting a pandemic get them down. This brand quickly capitalised on takeway market. Utilising Uber eats and other delivery options.

Their focus on specials through the week especially their Monday burger special, Made it affordable for us to eat delicious food at a great price.

This is a staple take away brand in South Africa. Also focuing on burgers and chips but more on the fast food side. South Africas answer to Mcdonalds. When I think of Steers I think of my childhood and their brat pack meals (basically the kiddie meal ie happy meal) and of course their Wacky Wednesday special. This Wednesday special is what they are known for and it always has been 2 burgers for a crazy good deal.

But why they make the list is their chips. Something about the way they make these chips it is just special. Focusing on a more softer style. There is a mixture of slight crisp too. Melt in your mouth goodess. They have even capitalised on making their own brand of sauce. BBQ style which goes perfectly.

In our suburb of Durbanville we have an incredible fishery. Providing what I think is the best fast food style fish and chips I have tasted. Cape Town being a coastal city is known for its amazing seafood. Fresh fish is a major thing in this city.

Fish and chips is a staple meal that we eat often. My mom is the Queen of finding the great deals. The best special is the Tuesday special. They offer fish chips, 2 tempura prawns and calamari at such a good deal. Its a treat we have often.

Now the fish is fantastic but the chips... Legenday ie Barney from HIMYM vibes. They utilise the softer style which we call slap chips. Slap is South African slang I think it means soft? I would say these chips are so good that it would be a must on a foodie tour of Cape Town.

Believe me it was not easy to decifer between Number 2 and Number 1 because Durbanville Fisheries chips are that good.

But ...

The winner is:

This brand is very simalr to the Tiger's Milk chain. Rocomamas also focuses on a very popular food genre in South Africa that of the burger and chip vibe. What makes them stand out though is the diverse markert. They make a decadent delicious burger and have a variety of versions.

They also have a very young and funky feel with a very bright orange feel throughout their branding. This eye catching hot spots also have that vibe that people are looking for. Before Covid they had the most quiry menus. Menus you filled out for yourself. Something I havent seen done in South Africa.

The ribs, nachos and chicken wings are just heavenly. They make the most delicious shakes and nutella waffles. When I eat there I make it an event and make sure to order things that can be shared so I don't miss out.

Now the reason why they are number 1?

These chips are just amazing but its the cheesy version that will change your life. Warning this is a very rich side dish but it is worth it I promise.

What do you think? Do you agree with my list and if you disagree who would you add to the list?

Let me know in the comments.
