The Lekker List

What is the Lekker list?

Well first of all Lekker is a very South African word. It is an Afrikaans word that refers to something being good. It is also used in terms of food like my burger was lekker.

Afrikaans is one of the 11 official languages spoken in the country. Seeing as South Africa as a country is such a diverse country with so many languages. This means there is a mixture of different races and cultures. All blended together for what we call the rainbow nation.

My personal experience and history is determined by my family. My mother comes from Afrikaans family but is completely bilingual and choose to marry a Brit. This meant my brother and I were brought up as English as our first language. In school is where I learned other languages.

Afrikaans is a very popular second language and even in some of my schools I was taught other languages depending on the region. My childhood and school career was spent at a number of different schools seeing as we did move around a fair share. At one stage even making the move to UK for 2 years.

I am proud to see myself as an English person. I can understand the basic elements of Afrikaans as long as the person doesn't talk too fast. The word lekker is just an iconic and delicious word. I thought it would be the perfect choice fot my list of my fav things in the culinary world of Cape Town.

So have a look at the Lekker list. I started with coffee. Seeing as there is such a huge coffee following Cape Town. I found it very easy to just start visting a coffee shops. Wee have major franchises that have numerous stores all over the country. But I sometimes find that our smaller coffee shops hav their own special flair. Each offering something different.
